Nederland is a funky town located near the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the James Peak Wilderness. Established in 1885, the town started as a trading post between the Ute Indians and European settlers during the 1850's. Shortly after, the town boomed when tungsten, silver and gold were discovered nearby. The town had so many people they rented beds in 8 hour shifts and restaurants limited people to 20 minutes each to eat. Hotels in Nederland could cost as much as $6.00 to $10.00 per week, more than a month's wages at the time.
Saint Malo Church also known as The Chapel On The Rock.
In 1916, Monsignor Joseph Bosetti came across a large rock formation just east of Rocky Mountain National Park and inspired by the Biblical phrase "upon this rock I will build my church", he envisioned a church built on the rock. His lack of funds delayed construction for nearly 20 years. Eventually, land for the church was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Malo and Denver architect Jacques Benedict designed the chapel, which was completed in 1936.
Mount Meeker sets in the background and at 13,911 feet is the second highest peak in the Rocky Mountain National Park.
